Deep soft tissue massage

Using both manual techniques and massage tools to release the tissues so that all the various layers are free to move, removing any tethering or restriction to help regain full pain free movement.

Trigger point release

Sustained pressure onto taut bands or knots in the muscle will allow the muscle to “let go” and lengthen out, achieving better movement and less pain.

Specific advice

The right advice is absolutely critical in your recovery. Often so much confusion around what is the best thing to do, for example hot or cold, rest or move, when to return to sport, when to return to work, will I cause further damage? All of these can be answered with a treatment session, accelerating your recovery.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a form of electrotherapy that uses ultrasonic sound waves to create a vibration and even cavitation in the tissues which can assist with healing or breaking down scar tissue, such as following a ligament injury. It is particularly useful for tendonitis as it increases the blood flow to the tendon, leading to reduction of inflammation. It is a very safe modality, having been used since the 1940’s

Acupuncture

This is a modality that has been around for thousands of years. I have used it with great effect for the last 20 years. Its results never cease to amaze me. Very fine needles are inserted into acupuncture points, helps with endorphin production and many more effects that still haven’t been fully explained despite extensive research.Often helps to relax and improve quality of sleep.

Electroacupuncture

This involves applying a small comfortable current to the needles which will enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.

Auricular acupuncture

This involves needles to the ear. The whole body is mapped out on the ear. For ongoing acupressure i can apply seeds with a tiny plaster that will give ongoing therapy for days afterwards.

TENS

Transcutaneous Electrical Nervous Stimulation is a natural way of achieving pain relief without medication. It works by blocking nerve pathways and stimulating the production of Endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. It involves the placement of electrodes on the skin, around the painful area, which then produce either a tapping or tingling sensation which is far nicer than the pain.

Gait training

Pain, weakness and stiffness will usually result in an altered walking pattern. Prolonged altered gait can cause compensations and issues elsewhere in the body so its best to get help to correct your gait. Sometimes you may not even be aware that you have changed the way you walk!

Joint mobilisation

Joints can have reduced mobility for many reasons, most can be helped with techniques that mobilise the joint and regain the elasticity of the surrounding tissues such as the joint capsule and ligaments. Gliding the joint in ways you can’t do yourself will stretch and release the joint often resulting in less pain and better movement.

Individual exercise programme

Success is so often down to having the right exercises and performing them correctly. Poor technique may make them ineffective so its really important to have 1 to 1 training to maximise your results. Too many exercises can water down the effectiveness of the key ones so its also good to focus on a few critical ones initially.

Yoga tuition

I am a qualified yoga teacher, having studied a 200 hour yoga alliance course in Kerala in India.

Kinesiology Taping

This is a type of tape that is elastic and very comfortable to wear. It can be used in many different ways. Designed to relieve pain and give support and stability to joints and muscles without affecting circulation or joint motion. It can be used on acute injuries and as it unloads the tissues it can disperse bruising and speed up recovery.

Proprioceptive training

Proprioceptors are responsibility for giving you information about where a certain part of your body is in space. Often affected by injury, making them slow to send information, they need retraining so that you make a full recovery with no increased risk of re-injury. For example balance training after a sprained ankle.

Postural training

Posture varies from person to person but when poseur is particularly poor it can impact on how likely you will develop a problem. Sustained slouched postures will increase the incidence of disc disorders of the spine dude to the elevated pressure within the disc. Impingements can occur when there is and imbalance of muscles around a joint.

Nutritional advice

We are what we absorb!! Some foods don’t agree with some people and can cause a low grade inflammatory reaction which can manifest itself in many ways but often includes muscle and joint pains. From assessment I can advise on which foods may be causing your issues and give appropriate advice.

Sports people need advice on diet and supplements to maximise there performance and recovery.
